Nostrand Houses

In December 2023, Nostrand Houses, located in the Sheepshead Bay neighborhood in Brooklyn, is the first NYCHA development to vote to become a Public Housing Preservation Trust site. This is a historic moment for New York City public housing, as 808 residents, 56% of whom were Heads of Households, voted in this democratic process. Ensuring their voices were heard, and they had ownership in shaping the future of their homes.

Resident Partnerships

The Trust plans on collaborating with residents and stakeholders throughout the duration of the project to ensure that resident voices are heard and included. We want residents to be active collaborators in the various processes like design to vendor selection. The Trust and NYCHA will host meetings near Nostrand Houses to inform residents and other stakeholders of the project process.

Nostrand Resident Reports

The Resident Priorities Report outlines the Nostrand Houses community’s key priorities for the Trust Mod renovation project — addressing everything from desired improvements to the logistics of temporary relocations. This report will be included in the procurement package for shortlisted design and construction firms, serving as a guiding document to shape their proposals.

When you give people the equal opportunity to make choices you provide them with literature, you provide them with knowledge, you provide them with information they can make the best choice for the development

  • Resident input plays a vital role in identifying community needs. The Community Priorities Survey (CPS) was used to gather resident feedback, which will inform the development of the Community Resource Plan (CRP). This plan will outline services that complement the planned physical renovations.

Residents of Nostrand Houses, aged 18 and older, could submit the CPS either online through the Trust’s website or via paper copies available at the Property Management Office. In addition, the Trust enlisted Nostrand residents—both youth and adults—as paid outreach specialists to engage with the community and collect surveys.

Various outreach strategies were deployed, including door-knocking, tabling, phone calls, flyer drop-offs with survey links, and email blasts, all designed to encourage survey participation. The CPS was made available in English, Spanish, Russian, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese. Residents could submit their responses from early July to mid-October 2024.

As an incentive, six residents were randomly selected to win a $50 gift card for completing the CPS.

  • Missed the in-person meeting? NYCHA and the Trust are hosting an online Zoom session to discuss the upcoming renovation work at Nostrand Houses and the community’s key priorities.
